I also have 14 school days left at RCN - <i>ever!</i> And 50 days until graduation. Time flies, huh.<br />
<br />
This means that exam studying has kicked in. First years are starting Leirskule training (see "<a href="http://mettercn.blogspot.no/2012/04/leirskule.html" target="_blank">Leirskule</a>" for more) meaning their away most of the afternoon and second years have crawled back to their desks, the library and classrooms for reviews and intense studying. Even though we just had Easter, the usual afternoon-tiredness is kicking in and coffee seems like my best friend once again.<br />
(I even decorated it with this lovely picture saying "I'm so tired, I just want to sleep for a couple of days" - seemed appropriate :)<br />

In reality it isn't that bad. We are socializing a lot, every night (hint the tiredness) and enjoy every last moment in beautiful Flekke. Today I am going to take pictures for my second year corner in the yearbook. I took the one below on Saturday, but I have a slightly different idea in mine now.. You will see! Anyways, the sun is out and has been for the longest time (except for the occasional snow storm). It is also supposed to stay out for at least another week. Spring might have actually come to Flekke this year! </div>

As I am waiting for a letter or an e-mail to come with my financial, my book, that I ordered over a month ago, finally came today. I have promised myself not to read it before I have finished my English books for exams, but I am really excited. I don't actually like reading, but maybe I have just gotten so used to school literature being throw at me with a deadline, that I forgot what it was like to read for the literature itself. We will see how it goes. My motivation to finish my books for English is high now, because I just want to get started with "Looking for Alaska". I don't know much about it, and the reviews are mixed, so let's hope won't disappoint me. </div>

This means <b>last</b> sledding-trip, <b>last </b>Global Concerns day, <b>last </b>cultural day.. <b>Last </b>times of everything, and then what? It ends. Something else starts. But what?<br />
<br />
I think most of my class, including myself, has realized that the unknown future is coming our way, meaning that we've put away excuses and blog updates in favor of tea, long walks, pool parties and RCN fun. I hope this explains my lack of updates. I'll try to make up for the lost with a picture update now:<br />

In February, while the first years were off to ski-week, we had reading week. This is a week off to study and prepare for the following week's practice exams. This was my life. A cup of coffee and a bowl of fruit. Not to bad, huh? </div>

Following the tradition, we pranked the first years for their return to campus. The second years always switch around their curtains, so when they come back tired from skiing, they have to walk around from room to room and find out who has their curtains. Furthermore, Tenzin (Tibet/India) and I blew up what felt like a million balloons and put them in Maja's (Sweden) bed, and hung toilet paper in Nkanyezi's (Zimbabwe) bed. We are such sweet roommates :) </div>

Today, we have 100 more days in the fjords of Norway, to enjoy the rain and brighten up the night.<br />
<br />
My friend, Alonso (Peru) has made this blog and I just had to share it <a href="http://rcn100.tumblr.com/" target="_blank">http://rcn100.tumblr.com/</a><br />
Take a look through his experience - I think it will talk for itself.<br />

<br />
As this year's RCN Model United Nations conference has officially been opened with tonight's Opening Ceremony I would kindly invite all of you to take a trip with me back to <a href="http://mettercn.blogspot.no/2012/03/rcnmun.html" target="_blank">last year's conference</a>, but also to look at the changes for this year. The travel from the delegate of the State of Palestine of to Ms. Mette Dehlbæk, chair of the DISEC committee.<br />
Again this year MUN last for three days including today, tomorrow and Tuesday. Delegates in DISEC will be discussing, with me charing, the question of total elimination of nuclear power and so far it seems as it is going to be a fruitful debate. Delegates are as always asked to use formal language and dress accordingly to the formal dress code. Delegates not following these instructions may be excluded for the chamber for an amount of time set by the respective chairs.<br />
<br />
.. Okay, really, it gets old. I can talk like this all day, no problem. I love dressing up and I wouldn't mind doing it every day for the rest of my life, but when I get home, back to my room and put on pj-pants and a sweat-shirt, I wanna be able to let out my thoughts and use "I" and not "the chair".<br />
<br />
Just like with a lot of the other things I am experiencing this year, it is a totally different but just as meaningful experience to be 'on the other side'. I see the first years going through MUN with thoughts <u>exactly</u> like mine were a year ago, and still they don't understand that the advice we give as second years are really from experience. I guess everyone will have to learn on their own.<br />
<br />
Here is a link to the media's blog: (yes, a gossip column from the conference) - most of it is pretty funny: <a href="http://mun2013.tumblr.com/" target="_blank">http://mun2013.tumblr.com/ </a><br />

<br />
As IAs (Internal Assessments) are thinning out (I finally finished) and mock exams are only three weeks again, the end of the term; the two years and graduation seem closer and closer. Though it seems like this winter will never end and I will never see anything but a school book again, summer is really getting closer quite rapidly and suddenly it will be May. Universities, summer jobs, drivers license and future plans are filling our senior heads, as we try to get every last squish of joy and happy memories out of this place.<br />
<br />
Hopefully we will succeed as many items have already been checked off my bucket list. More about that in the future post :)<br />
<br />
Happy almost last month of official winter (even though we all know about Flekke and snow in May..)<br />
<br />Mette Dehlbækhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/17500334129056371402noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4110525979635294013.post-1446731595968401082012-11-29T18:24:00.000+01:002012-11-29T18:24:06.804+01:00ToK MomentsIt's Thursday morning, a pretty usual school day. I just sat through yet another Theory of Knowledge presentation (ToK) and it got me thinking. Theory of Knowledge is a course mandatory for all IB students, in order for us to become 'critical thinkers.' In the end of the course, which at RCN ends after the third term, everyone has to do a ToK Essay and a ToK Presentation. I don't want to go into more detail, because most people taking the course probably still wouldn't be able to explain to you exactly what it is.<br />
<br />
Today, my friend Alonso (Peru) had a presentation of our aesthetic perception. He was talking a lot about how for example the layout of an university website defines part of our final decision. This made me think. I have gone on to many university sites, after reading just a big about them on <a href="http://www.collegeboard.com/" target="_blank">CollegeBoard</a>. Many times I haven't been too impressed about the school from reading and have then gone on to an unorganized and to be not very pleasing website leading to me often not giving the school much consideration. The other day I went on a virtual tour of a Campus and even from pictures of a school I had really liked from reading, I didn't find it the buildings and the feeling I got from this very personal and therefore not very pleasing to me. I think this had a big impact on me as I went on to further reading and learning about the school (that I have now decided probably not to apply to anyways.)<br />
<br />
Some of our discussions after the presentation made me think about my schooling and how we learn differently. I remember when I took piano lessons, how I had a very clear way of learning. If I got a piece to learn for the next lesson and my teacher didn't play it for me before leaving, it could take me a very long time to get it right, but if she just played it once I would remember and hear it right away if I played a wrong tune. In that way it always worked much better for me to hear and get things explained than to read them myself. It made me thin of how weird it is that no more research or effort has been put into developing people's different ways of learning. If someone is very visual vs. someone very oral and everything is taught in lectures, do we really give everybody the same fair opportunities for education? I don't know. I just wanted to share some thoughts as I am waiting and waiting for the big university decision e-mail.<br />
<br />
Tonight we have advisor movie/Christmas night. I think we are watching one of my favorites "The Polar Express", eating Christmas cookies and drinking Gløgg (traditional Nordic Christmas drink, in this case non-alcoholic).<br />
<br />
8 more days until home!Mette Dehlbækhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/17500334129056371402noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4110525979635294013.post-13206360280176302252012-11-28T10:16:00.001+01:002012-11-28T10:16:49.444+01:00Follow Up (in pictures)<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Okay, I admit it. I didn't get a picture with the Queen, of course not, I'm not important enough for that. But I saw her, I smiled at her, I talked to a minister instead and met a lot of other interesting people. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Northern Lights: Here is one of my pictures. It was the strongest, most beautiful Northern Lights I have seen, better than last year. Unfortunately it is very hard to photograph..</div>

<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Since my last post forever-ago, I went to the US and found my dream school. I applied and now I'm waiting. Yesterday I had a Skype interview with another school, but it's not even comparable. Cross your fingers for me :) </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
On Saturday, we had the Asian Day. Currently, Christmas has moved into my corner and Sweden House. I live off Christmas cookies and hot chocolate and studying with "It's Beginning To Look A Lot Like Christmas" blasting out of my headphones. This Sunday I organized a Christmas gathering for the Danes and we watched Danish Christmas shows, listened to Danish Christmas song, ate Danish Christmas food and made Danish Christmas decorations. It was lots of fun and very cozy. I have been counting down the last 24 days until we leave (the RCN December month) and today is the 15th. Almost there :)<br />

I am getting very excited to sleep in my bed and eat my mom's food and see everybody again, so I can go back, fully charged, for the fourth (and last :S) term. It is a bit scary that the time is flying so fast, but I guess it is all just about enjoying as much as possible what we've got for now.<br />
<br />
Phew, very fast and brief, but lots more to mention. I will update more later!<br />
Take care and Merry Christmas.Mette Dehlbækhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/17500334129056371402noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4110525979635294013.post-14728609958903826352012-10-22T19:51:00.001+02:002012-10-22T19:51:34.336+02:00Back to BusyI know I still owe an update about the Queen and Oslo. Until that comes in here's a <a href="https://uwcrcn.no/News/whats_on.html" target="_blank">link</a> to an article written by the school on the event. There should also be a couple of pictures coming from the <i>outstandingly amazing</i> Northern Lights we had here last week.<br />
<br />
For now the update is the following:<br />
This past weekend I went to my host family. It was an amazing weekend away, a good break, lots of cake and good company. I made this with my host mother and cousin:<br />

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Apart from that I am working hard to finish everything before next Friday, so I can travel to the big USA and enjoy my time there away from too many books. Also, I am working hard on finishing my first college application and I must admit that after rewriting a supplement 3½ times, it's hard to find the perfect way to represent yourself on paper. </div>

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
For now I went back to scratch and restarted by brainstorming everything that could answer the question about something in my life that has changed me. (I am deliberately not mentioning the name of the school, mostly for privacy and because it is irrelevant to the fact that I am writing an application. Even though I would be very excited to attend this school in the future.) </div>

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Have a great week! </div>

As I mentioned earlier this week, this week is PBL-week and I am attending "A journey into self-publishing." Goal for the week? To produce and publish at least one book. Personal goal? Find out whether there is still creativity left in me and do something different. Earlier this week I posted a picture from my personal process, but you can see more on my teacher Ana's blog: <a href="http://www.anaflecha.blogspot.no/" target="_blank">anaflecha.blogspot.no</a>. </div>
<br />
As of today I have finished two very similar books, one with a black and white background and colored characters and one with a colored background but black and white characters. My book is an image book and a comment on how we easily get stuck in life just doing the same things again and again. It is a continuous and never ending book with the quote "Isn't it funny how day by day nothing changes but when you look back everything is different".<br />
<br />

The week has been amazing. Not too much rain and the art room must be the classroom on Campus with the best view - especially on a day like today.<br />

<br />
As of last week I thought I was gonna have to sit down and write an actual full book during this week; a thought that scared me a bit. I had planned on writing a children's book so it could be short and simple, but when I found out that everything was possible the ideas came flowing. It is so relaxing to just sit and create a something that was once a thought and develop it unto paper. It really clears the head.<br />
<br />
Tomorrow I am headed to Oslo and my biggest concern is still what to wear :-) Not too bad a concern.<br />
<br />
Roger out,<br />

<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
It is getting colder by the minute and I have had to unpack both woolen socks, thermal shirts (for my Flekke runs) and my winter jacket. According to the locals, taken from the amount of berries on the trees at this time a year, it will be a long and very cold winter with lots of snow. Can you feel the excitement already? If yes, please share. There is (almost) nothing worse than feeling cold. I even decided not to interview with a university or two, among other things, because they were located in climates too cold for me. I am also exaggerating a little bit :-) In reality I love wearing woolen socks and have been told multiple times that I am the worst Nordic ever, because I am always cold. </div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
Here is a couple of pictures from the weekend. Hopefully tomorrow morning will be as beautiful as today. This time I will bring my camera and be prepared so I can share some of the beauty of Flekke with you!</div>

On Saturday was the dear First Years amazing show and I think we all enjoyed it. It was based mostly on sketches making fun of us second years, mixed between lots of talented dancing, singing and so on. Here: a picture of Emma (UK) and part of her band - Yondeen (Nepal) on the bass. Following the show was another Saturday night party and for the first time this year I stayed from beginning to end - 2½ hours of dancing and having fun! As always in great company :-) </div>

Some might remember it from my not extremely enthusiastic and positive post about the <a href="http://mettercn.blogspot.no/2011/10/chinese-pbl.html" target="_blank">Chinese PBL</a> I attended last year. I can promise you that this year's review will be much better! This year I am in a PBL called "A journey into self publishing" with my Spanish teacher, Ana. We are in the art room with a view over the fjord and tunes of music in the background - just as I like it. I won't talk too much about it now, but rather update by the end of the week, but here is a pre-view of the first step of my image book. It will not look like this once it is finished, but here is a teaser anyways :-)<br />When I'm not in the art room, I spend my time getting some of my to-do list finished and ticked off. Lately this has taken place from my new favorite spot: my bed, he he. It makes the cold a little more bearable when you can sit under a blanket with a cup of something hot, with candles and lights all around you!</div>

On Friday I am headed for a day-trip to Oslo for the Norwegian National Committee's celebration of the 50 year anniversary of UWC. We are a group of 8 (I believe) students and a small number of staff selected to go. Attending will be no one else but the Queen of Norway, the Norwegian minister of education and other 'important' people. I am indeed very excited and still trying to figure out what to wear, ha ha. You know life is good when that is one of your biggest concerns! - More on this later as well.</div>

These last two weeks have been a good mix. Firstly, I worked until my brain almost exploded; handed in my Extended Essay, other assignments and did my best on big tests. Last week I moved myself and my things into the library and spend every break from classes and every left-over minute in the little study-booth I had occupied. Ironically, I was the person who said all last year that I would not study in the library and much more preferred a classroom, but after giving the library a chance for the first time, I actually came to like it. It came as a big shock to many; not only me :) </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Christine and I were also trying to find out what to do for a fun break in small-village Flekke and coming up with free things, that doesn't require you to be outside in the <u>cold</u>! Sometimes demands a bit of creativity. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Now, I don't want my life to sound horrible, because it is really quiet perfect. All the hard work last week payed off well and for the last couple of days I have been relaxing, sleeping lots at night and then napping in the afternoon, hung out with friends, gone to birthdays, baked the muffins that Rikke (Norway) and I bought the mix for in intro week. I have relaxed! Now I feel re-charged and ready to follow my plan for assignments and studying the next couple of months until November and Christmas break. I feel like I have it under good control and I just need to work a little every day for it to work out. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
So not much is new in "The World of Mette" (except for maybe this guy staring at me)</div>

Shakespeare is a little better with a cup of coffee and some of my newly bought fruit and yogurt. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Tomorrow a team from school (including myself) are playing soccer against the local high-school from Dale. It's apparently been years since there was last such a game, because the Dale team used to beat us so badly that they didn't see it as a real challenge. Let's hope we can change that! This match is in celebration of the International Peace Day (every year on September 21st!). We are having a special day and celebration here all day tomorrow, so I will update more on that post the day. As of now we should get both media coverage here and at the soccer field! Maybe I will be on the Norwegian News tomorrow? Let's hope I don't embarrass myself more than necessary :) </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Overall, I am happy as.. zoo animal getting food? </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Hope you will share the Peace Day with us and maybe help spread the message? You can take part and read more through this link: <a href="http://peaceoneday.org/" target="_blank">http://peaceoneday.org/</a></div>

As school is back on high speed and the (infamous) third term has started there is plenty of things on my plate. Deadlines, exam practice, presentations, more deadlines, test, studies and then all the other activities on the side. I'm just gonna apologize in advance for the next couple of months and then (maybe) lack of posts. For now, I'll give you some more picture updates:

The other night there was supposedly a storm coming (over night). All I know, is that from around four in the afternoon until I went to bed our power was as unstable as a sleeping cow (I just came up with this expression. Pretty good, huh?) For hours it would go out, then come back on and we could only just sit and wait until it disappeared again. This is how I survived. </div>

Friday: First years vs. Second years soccer match # 1 of the year and we FINALLY found someone we could beat. Oh, it feels so good. (3-0 by the way). </div>

I hope you will have a good weekend, while I'll get my head back in the books. </div>

Mette Dehlbækhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/17500334129056371402noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4110525979635294013.post-9307048316251226512012-08-27T09:47:00.000+02:002012-08-27T09:47:29.497+02:00Spices, spices, spices! It seems that this is going to be the year I will learn to eat spicy foods. The other night I was in the dayroom with a group of Sweden Housers and Yacine from Senegal cooked noodles for us, including her mom's home-made yellow chili spices. The taste was amazing, but the feeling it left in my red-cheeks and running nose was a little less nice. I could eat a couple of bites and then take a break, but it did seem like a good way to eat, because we didn't even manage to finish.<br />
Now, if I thought that was about as spicy as it gets, I was very wrong, because the following day I was in my room with Kristoffer (Denmark) when my roommate Tenzin (Tibet/India) offered us a snack. It was a kind of potato chips and looked pretty delicious, but after the expression of Kristoffer's face after he tasted one, I decided to only take a very small piece and I found out why. THIS was spicy! Once again it tasted delicious, but a couple of seconds after the taste went away, my mouth literally caught on fire (I thought it did :)).<br />
<br />
Today and tomorrow is Extended Essay (EE) writing days for us second years, so I better get back to business!<br />Take care.Mette Dehlbækhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/17500334129056371402noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4110525979635294013.post-10607496781345571352012-08-21T15:47:00.003+02:002012-08-21T15:47:59.409+02:00Aaaaand action! Wednesday afternoon, after a couple of amazing days in Copenhagen, Mia (Germany), Ibrahim (Sweden), Kristoffer (Denmark) and I headed to the ferry between Oslo and Copenhagen with all our suitcases, food, and other bags. Finally we made it to the harbor and to the bottom floor: 2 and our small cabin. We had a very nice trip, first on the deck in the sun, later around the 7 story boat!<br />
<div>
Thursday morning we landed in Oslo and once again managed to get our luggage transported all the way to the Hostel. We Spend Thursday and Friday exploring Oslo and having our last city-fun, before Saturday's successful Nordic Peace Conference and 10 hours bus-ride back to Flekke.<br />

We arrived in Flekke around 7:30 am Sunday morning and from there I spend all day moving in to my new room with my co-year; Tenzin, from Tibet. I move right upstairs from 103 to this years 203 and it is an amazing room so far. Sunday afternoon our first first-year roommate arrived. She is called Noot and is from Thailand. She has been at the summer course for the past month, so she knows her way around and is absolutely adorable! During Sunday and Monday, two of my Danish first years; Max and Jakob, arrived. They also seems awesome. Monday-Tuesday night we waited for the Bergen bus for hours! Lots of walking back and forth to the room, but finally around 1 am it happened and everything went crazy. I met three more first-year Danes and my two last roommates; Maja from Sweden and Nkanye from Zimbabwe. We just now showed them around campus until the rain got too hard and we headed back to our warm room, that still smell like noodles from last night. </div>
<div>
<br />
Tenzin gave me a package of chili for all our room noodles sessions and also predicted I'd die somewhere during my first mouthful :) I'm excited, hehe. </div>

<div>
On Thursday I'm gonna wake up early and eat before the sun rises and then try and fast a day with some Muslims. All this cultural sharing :) </div>

<div>
All I can really say is, that it has never been so amazing to come back before. I really missed this place (except for the rain). </div>

(Almost)It's coming to an end, the first 10 months at RCN. Classes ended on Tuesday, I finished packing today and on Friday night we'll be in a buss on our way to somewhere else. Some stay in Norway, some visit friends and most go home for a while.<br />
I am going to call this my Summer vacation of 2012, but I shouldn't. A break is nice, but we cannot forget the studying. Assignments are hitting hard and if we want to not overload and basically kill ourselves next term, we gotta try and get some of them out of the way over the Summer. So why am I still calling it a vacation? Because in a week and some hours I am leaving the home I just came back to and heading to the airport where 5½ weeks of vacation are waiting for me! I am off for two weeks in Venezuela to visit that one boy :) And then on the road/in the air? Again, for three+ weeks in amazing Indiana.<br />
Then I head back for a couple of days in Copenhagen before I hit the road with my parents and go to our Summer House and hopefully there I'll get some studying done (in the sun!???)<br />

I must admit it was some organizing getting a year packed down and away, so it could wait nicely for me in the shed behind Sweden House but after hours and hours I succeeded! 3 bags, a suitcase and two small boxes! Wheeew. Follow some of the process in the pictures :)<br />

I suck, I know it! You are probably wondering what happened to the more the less active blogger. I have one answer: IB! Now I don't want to make it sound worse than it is, but first year exams came up and they are quite important for university applications so within days my studying went from this:</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhqsm46N4yBU9ehcwwnx7jHbS2ctqFkm_R1_zRpvpGsqhVmvteRGWklvAfYnl5UAkE-QLzQa-LJilJ4W9mseuxO8WnDlOWfzfW3KMQvtZFljVqjapVuIOZwqgjpKziFZBU0B-NRfXqZNQ47/s1600/DSCN0988.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="240" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhqsm46N4yBU9ehcwwnx7jHbS2ctqFkm_R1_zRpvpGsqhVmvteRGWklvAfYnl5UAkE-QLzQa-LJilJ4W9mseuxO8WnDlOWfzfW3KMQvtZFljVqjapVuIOZwqgjpKziFZBU0B-NRfXqZNQ47/s320/DSCN0988.JPG" width="320" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
To this! </div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiqEjqfCAj_0qmuwp8gxJS7hHONI7gL0USy0PXl_weU2u96jroy7za8osJKFN-K8-Yi2IoHK9jhkUOjkpizWmBsInQRrnlUrzPGajL8izG4fN45v4FqMPUooSdcICaEeWXcqLqKw3pBJGml/s1600/DSCN1021.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="240" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiqEjqfCAj_0qmuwp8gxJS7hHONI7gL0USy0PXl_weU2u96jroy7za8osJKFN-K8-Yi2IoHK9jhkUOjkpizWmBsInQRrnlUrzPGajL8izG4fN45v4FqMPUooSdcICaEeWXcqLqKw3pBJGml/s320/DSCN1021.JPG" width="320" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
It was a bit chaotic because my physics and economics tests were on the same day, so it was no life, lots of notes, coffee and desperate methods, but I survived right? Now if it wasn't for IAs, EE and so on (those who knows the IB will get me) I would have had my life back by now :) </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Since that, the second years left. Saturday, May 19th. One of the saddest days of my life and the following days as well, but it also brought us first years closer. I started hanging out with people I hadn't talked to much since the beginning of the year and we didn't study much. At the same time the sun came out and gave us about 26 degrees and full sun every day! That helped us get the thoughts off of things too and we went for a lot of walks and hung out in the sun. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Then the assignments came back, but I think we're all agreeing that our minds have gone on an early summer break. Even thought the last day of classes isn't until Thursday, we have had special days all this week with only two blocks a day; from 8-10 and 10:30-12:30. This allows the different ToK groups to go on an overnight trip to a farm not far away. I am going tomorrow night! </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Yesterday we went to Bergen with the Nordic classes. We went to a museum and then we had four hours off. Kris and I walked up to a view point and saw the city from above. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjEZQkSxDbX9ZXZcLGYX-JRhEpv8xeu9BjPwCXMkx1Kn9SxCyW38gz-QbmZUFaX12OrwFUwNUfdwrkZX5_sxtpMUuKZE9LNQWXPVYv_kYi6G5JRaZeZvQNZ3AmUveAYX9TetxZIOUpDRAyt/s1600/DSCN1488-001.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="240" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjEZQkSxDbX9ZXZcLGYX-JRhEpv8xeu9BjPwCXMkx1Kn9SxCyW38gz-QbmZUFaX12OrwFUwNUfdwrkZX5_sxtpMUuKZE9LNQWXPVYv_kYi6G5JRaZeZvQNZ3AmUveAYX9TetxZIOUpDRAyt/s320/DSCN1488-001.JPG" width="320" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
On the way we saw a snake! I think we both got a bit shocked. We also saw to road construction signs in the middle of this path and there was definitely no construction in sight. Crazy Norwegians! :) </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
We ate a nice dinner (not Kantina food) and then we all met again to see a dance show between Norwegian folk dance and Chinese Kong Fu (I think). </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Lot's of other things have happened, but I will try to get at least one more update in before I leave campus in 8 days :) </div>

The SATs are required by far the most Universities in the U.S. and is a test in English and Mathematics. Here, we can take the test in May, October, November or December (or re-take it) but I thought it'd be nice to have it over with this term, since rumor has it next year is going to be even more busy. So after being locked in the Høegh, one of our buildings, from 8-13 today, it's over and it feels great! Now there's nothing more to do than to wait for the results and hope for the best. Suddenly everything got serious.. Universities? Second years graduating in two weeks. Going home in a month! Where did time go?<br />
I have first year exams from Thursday, May 10th until Friday, May 18th, so I will probably dig a big hole and jump into it with my school books for the next couple of weeks! See you on the other site!Mette Dehlbækhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/17500334129056371402noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4110525979635294013.post-87326095096525180122012-04-22T23:58:00.003+02:002012-04-23T00:02:05.731+02:00My 18th Birthday!<i>Today was one of the most memorable birthdays of my life. I have now experienced a lot of different traditions and also a real RCN birthday all for me :)</i><br />
<br />
It all started a little before midnight when Sam and two other guys kidnapped me and blind-folded me. After getting me through small challenges they finally carried me to the Boat House where they took the blind-fold off and a bunch of people were yelling "HAPPY BIRTHDAY!!" A little while after Evelina, my neighbor whom I am happy to share my birthday with, arrived and the same happened to her :) Lots of birthday songs and hugs lead me back to my room where my roommates had prepared tea and fruit salad and a cozy evening. All this before Sam brought over a couple of my birthday presents and I could go to sleep full, happy and loved.<br />
<br />
I think one important thing to mention is my unbelievable dislike of birthday songs. It is not that I don't like the songs or the sweet thoughts behind it; it is the fact that I have absolutely no idea what to do and where to place myself when people start singing to me! A lot of my good friends here knows that I had nicely asked a couple of weeks ago to not make my birthday a big deal and not let everyone know, so I could just spent it with good friends and avoid all the attention. But traditions are traditions and apparently there is no such thing as a low-key RCN birthday.<br />
(For all the Danes out there: the weather was AMAZING! <a href="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QcyhIznBqeM&feature=relmfu" target="_blank">åhjaåhjajaåhjaja!</a> <-- watch!)<br />
<br />
This morning, as the traditions mentioned in <a href="http://mettercn.blogspot.com/2012/02/birthdays.html" target="_blank">Birthdays</a> followed, I was woken up by singing Danes and "I dag er det Mettes fødselsdag..." and a clear message that I had 2 minutes to be in Kantina (I didn't manage). In Kantina I was met with pancakes, buns, chocolate buns, chocolate, "rugbrød" and more Danish singing ("Mette har fødselsdag og det har hun jo og det er i dag... I chose the sounds/instruments: cow/muh, banjo and trumpet) <br />
<br />
In English, after yet another birthday song, that my sweet friends made sure would come, because they know "how much I love it" (# 5 of the day) Pete (Britain), my teacher, thought he should also do some cultural sharing, so with a little help from Alonso (Peru), Olve (Norway) and Diego (Bolivia) they each took a leg or an arm and lifted me up and down 18 times! So I went to lunch and told my table about this, which just lead to Nikita (Russia) sharing their culture and pulling my ears upwards 18 times - the last time pretty hard! After that I was pretty happy to be Danish :)<br />
<br />
After school I had <a href="http://mettercn.blogspot.com/2012/04/leirskule.html" target="_blank">Leirskule</a> (which I just posted about) and I had a great group of kids; 7 girls and a boy. I had of course introduced myself as Mette from Denmark and after a while one of them asked if today was my birthday. I said yes, and asked how she knew and she said the she'd seen the card in the Kantina and remembered it being for a Mette. (The Danish flag probably also busted me a little). In the end, the girls decided to sing me a Norwegian birthday song (#6), and they all wished me happy birthday before they left. :)<br />
<br />
After this I went back to my room with my second year Kathrine and opened presents. Nothing less that earrings, american dollars and a drivers licence! My family must be crazy! I did not see that coming :D So watch out on the road now, because I can afford taking the licence now<b>. (Big thank you to Bedstemor, mor, far, Mads, Klaus+family, Laura, Mette and Sam for the presents! - And everyone else who made the day special of course! For all the baking, hugs and wishes!) </b><br />
<br />
At dinner, my friend Ahmad (Palestine) announced my birthday to the whole Kantina and as the tradition goes everyone stood up and sang for me (song #7!) and once again my awkward, blushing, "can I dig a deep whole now and jump into it, but still awwww thank you guys" face came on :)<br />
<br />
Later, Sam picked me up to go for a walk, but when he suddenly told me that he'd forgotten his gloves in A-building (this coming from the boy who'd been wearing a t-shirt and no jacket all day) I realized that something was going on and I was right. A surprise birthday with my closest friends from here including way too much cake, games, and some of those moments you will always remember!<br />

And after finally Skyping my parents, I was more than exhausted from a long day and when the date changed to April 20th, I could go to bed with a big smile on my face, feeling extremely lucky to have friends and family like this.<br />

Leirskule (translated: Camp school) is a Nordic tradition, that though varies from the different countries. In Norway Leirskule is focused on outdoors and what better place to go then, than to Flekke? Therefore, for I think 16 weeks a year (from April-October) we have a group of children coming and each day a different small group of students do different activities with them, depending what they've signed up for. (Here's a link for Norwegian understanding people: <a href="http://leirskule.no/" target="_blank">RCN leirskule</a>) Myself and three other students do diving with a group of them (normally about 4-10 children) in the pool, but we have only been going for two weeks so far.<br />
So basically we learn them how to dive with a snorkel, masks and fins and play around with them for a while and it is usually a great amount of fun!<br />
Other groups do things as kayaking, climbing, archery, adventure runs, cultural sharing activities and so on..<br />
<br />
Here's some pictures from some of last week's activities: <a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/leirskule/sets/72157629828369045/show/" target="_blank">http://www.flickr.com/photos/leirskule/sets/72157629828369045/show/</a>Mette Dehlbækhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/17500334129056371402noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4110525979635294013.post-78414385326033944412012-04-16T23:41:00.000+02:002012-04-16T23:41:02.304+02:00First YearsLong time, no writing.<br />
Things are getting more and more busy here with first year exams coming up in a couple of weeks and lots of studying to do before that. Last week we (the 1st year Danes) finally got an e-mail from UWC Denmark with our new 1st years. In one way it was really exciting! Exciting writing to them and welcoming them to the Danish RCN family. We had a nice brunch meeting this weekend, deciding how to approach them and I am now in contact with all six. This year they are four boys and two girls! I am still very excited to get to know them and a little sad that I won't get to go to their intro-trip this year. In another way it is weird, because it seems like yesterday that we got the e-mail, that we were accepted. To hear their excitement and impatience for coming here was amazing. Gave everyone a reminder of why WE are here. But this also means that our second years are leaving. The ones who took our hands for a while. The ones who had a shoulder to lean on. The ones that always had time for a talk and a cup of tea. The laughs, the good times, the not-so-good times, but most of all the memories we've made together, that will stay with us forever. It is sad, but we cannot take time for granted. It is all about enjoying what we have, which today is 1 month and two days and the new memories to come!<br />
<br />
I also had a very nice talk with Astrid, my Danish co-year, this weekend, talking about how we are a family. We do come from the same place; a very liberal country. We are used to 'living our own life' and we are noticing our friends starting to move out. At the same time as we are living this dream, we are trying to deal with authorities telling us what we can and cannot do and it is strange coming from our background. Another thing with being a Dane in Norway is the mutual feeling between our friends and family that we are "just in Norway." In a way it is hard for co-years to understand that we can also be homesick, even though we geographically are closer to home, because we too have to communicate over Skype and e-mail. Norway might seem close, but it is not just that easy going home. And this is where we must stand together as the Danish family and understand each other and I think both Astrid and I realized during this talk that this spring had taken us through the exact same thoughts and feelings and we hadn't used each other. So don't worry first years! We will be your family here. We will take good care of you :)Mette Dehlbækhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/17500334129056371402noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4110525979635294013.post-63708645499857226382012-04-04T15:54:00.000+02:002012-04-04T15:54:01.838+02:00Life vs. Good TimesWhile walking to Flekke today, to pick up the key to the apartment my parents are staying in while they are here (from tomorrow :D) I couldn't help but think about one question that I've gotten a couple of times now: if you should choose one, would you have went on exchange or UWC. And really, it's like choosing between the two best decisions I've made in my life, how can I?<br />
I think my UWC experience is so much different, because I went on exchange first and I wouldn't take that back. I went on exchange to find myself. I didn't want anyone from Denmark to visit or interrupt this process and it sure was a good thing for me, but that's not why I went to RCN. I applied for UWC because I was hungry for more. I wanted new experiences, I wanted to learn about the world, the people, the cultures. I wanted a different kind of schooling and I wanted to experience 'on my own' again. But then as I was walking back to College today, I looked around me at the amazing nature, considering writing yet another blog about how beautiful it is here, and realized that what I really wished for, was for the people I care for to come here and see it for themselves - share these moments with me! And that is probably the reason why I am so incredibly excited to have my parents come here - so they can understand what I'm experiencing better.<br />
Would I want to chose one experience? No. I chose exchange in a time of my life, where I'd barely heard the word UWC. In a time where exchange was right for me. I don't know where I would've been today without that and I never will, and I honestly don't really care, because so far it's given me experiences for a life time!<br />
If anyone is wondering, just do what you feel now. As an economics students I have to mention that there is an opportunity cost on everything, but I also strongly believe that we will all get the chances in life, that are meant for us :)Mette Dehlbækhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/17500334129056371402noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4110525979635294013.post-59966760135190428312012-04-02T14:34:00.001+02:002012-04-02T14:41:02.644+02:00Americas DaySaturday, March 31st was the Americas (North and South) Day and like the <a href="http://mettercn.blogspot.com/2011/10/european-day.html" target="_blank">European Day</a> it is all about cultural sharing. During the day there was different workshops and activities, not to forget the Bazar.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<br />
<br />
All this was followed by the Americas show at night.<br />
Kornelia (Sweden), Helene (Norway), Kathrine (Denmark) and I, who all have Latino boyfriends had mad a sketch making fun of them. The four of us, all in black, switched between being ourselves and part of another couple, as we had printed big pictures of heads, which was the only thing indicating the character. We kept it as a secret until the night, so only very few backstage people and so on knew that it was in it. It was a lot of fun and a great success. After the party we did though make a cozy nachos-night for them, to apologize :)<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<br />
The show was based on the movie "Up" and in between acts, clips from the movie, as well as the main characters acted out on stage gave us the story of Carl, Ellie and Russel.<br />

This time I'm gonna do a little bit of complaining, regarding getting wet socks, indoors, twice in a day! First of all, even though this was probably slightly more about me being tired and not thinking things through, when I went to the pool this morning to take a life-guard shift, I went through the dressing room, still in my clothes, to go to the main room and turn on the lights (since I was the first person there). But only making it a couple of steps into the dark of the dressing room, I </span>stepped <span style="font-size: 100%;">into a puddle of water! </span></span><div><span><span style="font-size: 100%;">Second of all, before going to a meeting today, I went into our bathroom where my roommate had just taken a shower and in some way managed to do it outside the shower curtain and on pretty much the entire bathroom floor. Once again, my feet were cold and wet.<br />(I do not like cold feet) </span></span></div><div><span><span style="font-size: 100%;"><br /></span></span></div><div><span><span style="font-size: 100%;">Now, looking past my grumpy 3 am post, it is about time to celebrate that this week, where I can't help but think my teacher's tried to get me down and make all big assignments due, is almost over. I now officially finished everything except for the conclusion of my Economics IA (Internal </span>Assessment<span style="font-size: 100%;">), which I'll safe for some more fun tomorrow! </span></span></div><div><span><span style="font-size: 100%;">The nice thing about this, is that it leaves me with a weekend without too many big assignments for the next week and hereby.... dududududuuuumm.. Time to work on my biggest assignment: The Extended Essay! </span></span></div><div><span><span style="font-size: 100%;"><br /></span></span></div><div><span><span style="font-size: 100%;">Don't you just have to love the IB? </span></span></div><div><span><span style="font-size: 100%;"><br /></span></span></div><div><span><span style="font-size: 100%;">Now, I must go to bed, before all this irony takes over :) </span></span></div><div><span><span style="font-size: 100%;"><br /></span></span></div><div><span><span style="font-size: 100%;"><br /></span></span></div>Mette Dehlbækhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/17500334129056371402noreply@blogger.com1
